Some seniors may not be as mobile as they once were, but that doesn’t mean that they have to stop having fun. Adding daily activities into a loved one’s life who may not be as active can help improve brain function, boost their immune system, and helps maintain their emotional health. Here are 5 fun activities to try with your loved one the next time you visit.
You’ll never know if you’re loved one is a secret artist if you don’t give them the tools to try it. Enjoying an art project can be therapeutic and is easy for people with low mobility. Try asking them what type of medium they like or subject matter they want to focus on and use that as inspiration for the project.
If your loved one has a passion for reading but isn’t able to do it on their own anymore, try reading them their favorite book, magazine, or newspaper. You could even make a list of one book a month you’d like to read with them, or if you aren’t able to visit as often as you’d like, you could also set them up with a few audiobooks to listen to.
3. Try New Hobbies
Perhaps your loved one had a hobby they always loved doing but moved away from it because life got too busy, or they want to try something new and they need your help starting off. Whether it be knitting, collecting stamps, or learning a new language, exploring a new hobby can be a great way to connect in a new way.
4. Watch Their Favorite Movies
Sometimes all you want to do is watch your favorite movie. Ask your loved one what their favorite movie or television show was and see if you can find it for you watch together.
Even if your loved one isn’t as mobile as they once were, you can always do chair exercises, chair yoga, or take short walks with them. This will help them keep their bodies moving and is a great bonding experience for both of you.
